Summer beckons road trips, and road trips uncover farm stands… Where you can satisfy your fresh food cravings with a just-picked bounty. Typically located at or near the farm, a farm stand can be a permanent (or semi-permanent) set-up, or something as small as a few roadside tables with crates and baskets filled with whatever was harvested that day. And then there is nendo’s most recent take on the farm stand called Petit Market. Promoting the spread of cheap and fresh agricultural products by supporting direct sales from farmer to consumer, these stands prevent food loss and strengthen local economies with style.
As expected from nendo, the Petit Market stands are wonderfully minimalist in form and function. The simple triangular structures come in four color variations for the exterior, while each user can customize it to their liking with paint and other accessories. The stand kit comes flat packed and can be assembled by one person without any special tools in about 10 minutes. Equipped with adaptable feet for installation on uneven surfaces in different environments, the design also comes with modular shelving capabilities to accommodate various items like flowers or long vegetables. Furthermore, the sloped roof protects them from snow during winter, while it functions as a chimney throughout the summer, releasing the heat from the inside.
Farm stands and farmers markets are the grocery stores of summer, when the produce is so ripe and flavorful you don’t need to do much to take it from your canvas tote to the plate. And it’s not just your tummy or the local economy that benefit. Buying from local farms means avoiding industrial farming and the environmental impact that follows from large-scale agriculture. So, by helping farm stands become as popular as farmers markets by designers such as nendo, we are funding the future of sustainable agriculture so that organic + responsibly-sourced produce don’t have to be a luxury.
