‘burr puzzle tower’ designed by cheng tsung feng emerges as a nine-meter-high pavilion, formed by interlocking wooden planks. located in yilan park of national center for traditional arts, taiwan, the project is based on the structure of the three-axis burr puzzle —pieces that include notched sticks are joined to build a three-dimensional symmetrical system— which has thousand years of history. this artwork sparked a combination between traditional craft and modern digital technology.all images courtesy of fixer photographic studio

cheng tsung feng created a tower that is gradually transformed from solid to void, by using digital modeling software (rhino with grasshopper). the project invites people to cross through the structure, while there are twelve golden marks in the tunnel to show the operable burr puzzles. guests can push them gently to see the ingenious structure of burr puzzle. apart from japanese cedar wood planks and steel support, ‘burr puzzle tower’ includes LED light strips that illuminate it during the night.interlocking wooden planks form 9-meter-high 'tower' in taiwan by cheng tsung feng
