Two women reported being punched by a stranger while walking downtown in the capital city on Friday
A Victoria man faces assault charges after two women reported being punched by a stranger while walking downtown in the capital city on Friday.
Police received a call around 3 p.m. regarding an assault in the area of Johnson and Wharf streets. A woman told police she was punched without provocation by a stranger.
Bystanders followed the attacker and detained him until police arrived.
Police said the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries in the attack.
After being arrested, police say the man then assaulted a police officer while in custody in a holding cell.
Police also tied the suspect to another reported assault which occurred shortly before the initial call. In that incident, a pregnant woman claimed she was punched by a stranger along Pandora Avenue. Police say the woman was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Brett Joseph Mountford, born in 1989, has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of assaulting a peace officer.
Victoria police say Mountford was also in breach of a conditional sentence order stemming from a conviction for assault causing bodily harm in connection with unprovoked assault on another Victoria woman in 2019.
He remains in custody pending a court appearance on March 25.
