The Ministry of Health has vaccinated 191,904 people — with 83,777 of those fully immunized with two doses
There were 42 new COVID-19 variant cases reported over the past three days, as the number of variant school exposures grow.
On Monday, the provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, said the 42 cases brought that total detected in B.C. up to 158 of the variants. The variants are more contagious than regular COVID-19 and cases are accelerating in the province.
Henry indicated that as of Monday there were 10 people actively sick with covid variants. The discrepancy with the new figures suggests that, because the secondary testing for the variant takes extra time, some of the people whose results were positive have already recovered.
Most, or 137 of the cases, have been the B117 variant identified in the U.K with 21 cases of the B1351 variant identified in South Africa.
On Monday afternoon Fraser Health reported a COVID-19 variant case at Cindrich Elementary School in Surrey.
This is the 11th variant exposure at a B.C. school, with 10 of those exposures in Surrey. There has been variant transmission in one of those schools, Surrey Traditional.
There were eight deaths and 1,478 new cases of COVID-19 reported over the past three days in the province (B.C. is the only province in Canada that does not provide daily updates over the weekend.) Of those, 857 cases were in Fraser Health.
Henry said there were 4,464 active cases of the disease in B.C., of which 236 were being treated in hospital including 65 in intensive care
There are six new health-care outbreaks (four in hospitals) and six that have ended. There are 14 active outbreaks in health-care facilities. The new outbreaks are at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay, Chilliwack General Hospital, Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody and Surrey Memorial Hospital.
Outbreaks were declared over at St. Paul’s Hospital, CareLife Fleetwood, George Derby Centre in Burnaby, Eden Gardens in Nanaimo, Wexford Creek in Nanaimo and Noric House in Vernon.
The Ministry of Health has vaccinated 191,904 people — with 83,777 of those fully immunized with two doses.
