This summer my husband and I welcomed our baby daughter, our first child, into our lives so when Julie asked if I’d create a gift guide for new parents, I jumped at the chance since my thoughts on the matter are still fresh. The first thing to remember when giving a present to a new parent is that with babies comes a lot of stuff, too much stuff. The kindest thing you can do is to either select something from their registry, order them a Postmates gift card (thank you brother and sister-in-law!), or send them something discreet and beautiful. The last thing anyone needs is a monstrous play pen, anything that makes noise, or plastic on plastic. Here are 10 gifts, many of which we have and love, for the new parent in your life.

Above: Founded by San Francisco-based art director Laura Bogert, Nido Box is a subscription service for age-appropriate toys for “the minimalist parent and chicest baby.” Each kit, sold separately or as a year subscription, is the perfect selection of Montessori-led toys for your baby, be they one to two months old, three to four months, five to six months, and so on. $900 for the full year or $160 per box.
Babies love musical things and if you&#8
Above: Babies love musical things and if you’d prefer not to hear a recording of Old MacDonald on repeat, this Siebensachen Music Box is a nice alternative. Playing Mozart’s Voi che sapete from Marriage of Figaro, the solid beech wood ball turns by an oversized key; €69.50 at Elenfhant.
Practical? No. Beautiful? Absolutely. Jeweler Sophie Buhai&#8
Above: Practical? No. Beautiful? Absolutely. Jeweler Sophie Buhai’s Baby Collection features six sterling silver or pear accessories for babies. It’s the sort of thing I imagine my daughter passing on to her son or daughter someday. Pieces range from $150 to $350 at Sophie Buhai.
Above: Learned about these thanks to Caroline Feiffer: Wet Wipes Covers from Danish brand Barnekammer (249 kr at Studio Mini). Before baby, I figured we’d keep our wipes hidden in the top drawer of the dresser next to our changing table. Turns out you really need them out and at the ready. This works wonders for covering unsightly packaging, and can graduate to a tissue cover once your baby is out of diapers.
